Abstract

A study of the Quaternary geology of the Canadian portion of the Châteauguay River watershed was undertaken as part of a joint groundwater study program conducted by the Geological Survey of Canada, INRS- ETE (Institut national de la recherché scientifique - Centre eau terre Environnement) and the Ministry of the Environment of Quebec. A grid-based technique has been designed to construct a 3D stratigraphic model of the Quaternary sediments overlying a fractured aquifer. This study applies a 3D-mapping method based on unit thickness calculation and relies on the use of a grid-calculating application in standard GIS software. It allows for simple and rapid computation of the respective thicknesses of the geologic strata based on surficial geology maps and borehole logs. The following sedimentary units were considered in the development of the 3D model, from top to bottom: organic, alluvial, lacustrine, eolian, coarse marine, fine marine, sandy gravelly glaciofluvial, sandy silty glaciofluvial and glacial (silty-clayey till).

Goals

Define the architecture of the geological formations and main units of the aquifer system, and build a 3D model of the quaternary sediments.

Introduction
Process step Sources
3D modeling is based on the integration of the surficial geology map and well data, using Mapinfo GIS software and Vertical Mapper grid computing software. The methodology applied is based on the calculation of the thickness of the units rather than on the elevation of the stratigraphic contacts. A regular grid was produced over the study area with cells of 30 x 30 m. The spatial distribution of the units fully respects the surficial deposits map contacts. Where the stratigraphic data were missing, the well database was improved by the addition of control points that mimic the anticipated variation in stratigraphic layers.
Well data from multiple data sources. "Ground penetrating radar" (GPR) surveys. Seismic surveys. Data from a portable percussion drilling device. Surficial geology map. Digital elevation model (DEM).
The quaternary stratigraphy has been simplified in the context of 3D modeling. The units, from the bottom to the top are: R: Cambro-Ordovician sedimentary rocks of the St. Lawrence Lowlands. T: Diamicton with sandy silty-clayey matrix continuous over most of the study area. The reworking by waves and currents can be locally important. This unit combines an ancient till at the base of the sequence (Till A), a glaciolacustrine unit (Middle-till complex) and the regional till (Till B). Gx: Ice-contact glaciofluvial sediments. Sand and gravel, blocks and diamicton. Up to 40 m thick. Gs: Subaqueous outwash fan Glaciofluvial sediments. Silt, sandy silt, sand, gravelly sand and diamicton. Up to 20m thick. These sediments are dominated by well-sorted sands and frequently contain silty rhythmites. Ma: Fine offshore marine sediments. Silt, sandy silt, clayey silt settled by decantation during the glaciomarine phase. Thickness from 0.5m to more than 5m. Mb: Littoral and nearshore marine sediments. Sand, sandy silt, gravelly sand and stratified gravel. Thickness of 0.5 to 5 m approximately. La: Fine offshore lacustrine sediments. Silt, sandy silt, clayey silt. Thickness of 0.5m to 3m, mainly near till mounds. Lb: Littoral and nearshore lacustrine sediments. Sand, sandy silt, gravelly sand and gravel. Thickness of 0.5 to 5 m approximately. These sediments often overly till and eskers. A: Present alluvial sediments (Ap) and terraced alluvial sediments (At). Silt, sand, sandy silt, gravelly sand and gravel frequently containing organic matter. Sediments deposited along the present-day rivers and during their incision in the quaternary formations. O: Organic deposits. Peat. Thickness ranging from 0.2 to 6 m. X: Embankment.
Well data from multiple data sources. Outcrops and surface observations. Surficial geology map.
